Philosophy

Biography

The Tao Circle

Goh Shigetomi shares the extraordinary experience and achievements of his 75 years.

What the Tao Circle Is

What We Talk About

LifeThrough diamonds
WaterThrough time
BeautyThrough yourself

There is much to discover in what Shigetomi speaks about. It is the foundation — and the truth — of how a person lives.

The Tao Circle began about ten years ago, and roughly 1,500 people have attended since.

※ Each theme is covered in a single session, three sessions in all. Those who have completed "Life" and "Water" may then join the "Beauty" session.
Those who complete all three are invited on a graduation trip to Kyoto, visiting genuine places there (optional, at your own expense).

Philosophy

What You Will Learn

Shigetomi strongly dislikes teaching others or stating things as absolute.

Everyone is free, and everyone is, in their own way, a little selfish. Valuing that, he speaks in plain words so that each listener can discover for themselves what it means to live as a human being. People live each day worrying, hesitating, searching.

What matters is whether you have a foundation to return to in those moments, and whether you are at peace within yourself.

Biography

A Short Biography of Goh Shigetomi

Resolved to live three lives, he worked as a car salesman, became Japan's top-selling salesman, and retired at 35.

He then entered the jewelry industry and developed the world's first device (the Fire Scope) for instantly revealing a diamond's brilliance. Invited by De Beers, he presented it at the Basel Fair in Switzerland.

Yet nowhere in the world could he find a cut that reflected every ray of light into its most beautiful brilliance, so he built his own cutting factory to create one himself. Years later he completed the world's first Excellent Cut diamond. He is a leading authority on diamonds, and his story has been published as "The Man Who Mastered the Diamond."

In his high school days, watching a clock, he thought, "I want to see the flow of time." That longing eventually led him to water. He began conversing with newborn water at the source of rivers, capturing the flow of time — a practice he has continued for 40 years.

One day, as he traced the flow of time, the figure of what seemed to be a water deity appeared. Why had it taken human form? From then on, what had been play became a calling. He has exhibited around the world, including as Japan's invited artist at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, and at Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera, where his exhibition marked the once-in-33-years unveiling of the temple's principal image.

Kiyomizu-dera

A Bond with Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera

He takes part in Kiyomizu-dera's annual observances, living out a way of life that faces one's own existence. Anyone who has attended the Tao Circle even once is welcome to join.

[Spring]

On April 3rd, Shimizu Day, he attends the "Gratitude for the Water of Life" memorial service held in the Main Hall, facing his own life. A Ryusuimon exhibition is held at the same time in the Sutra Hall.

[Autumn]

In November (in 2016, on the 12th and 13th, from 15:00), he attends the "Tao Circle — Service Connecting Life" memorial held at the Taihokaku hall before the Buddha's footprint, carrying thoughts forward to the future. A Ryusuimon exhibition is held at the same time at Jojuin.

※ The exhibitions are open to everyone. For details, please see the Information page.
